What is a location QR code for?

A location QR code takes people to an exact point on the map. When scanned, the phone opens the maps app at that spot and the person can get directions with one tap, without searching for or typing the address.

It is ideal for hard-to-find businesses, event entrances, meeting points, rural accommodation or anywhere a written address is not enough.

Advantages

  • Arrive without getting lostPeople open the map at the exact spot and get directions with one tap, without typing or searching for the address.
  • More precise than an addressCoordinates can mark the door, the parking lot or a side entrance, even when they differ from the postal address.
  • Ideal for hard-to-find placesCountry houses, farms, warehouses or meeting points with no clear street or number.
  • Fewer calls asking for directionsCustomers and guests find the place on their own, and you do not have to give directions over the phone.
  • Useful in any languageA map is just as clear to a tourist as to a local, with no directions to translate.

How it works in 3 steps

  1. Fill in the detailsEnter the latitude and longitude of the place (copy them from Google Maps).
  2. Customize the designChoose colors, dot shapes and a frame, or add your logo. The preview updates instantly.

  1. Open Google Maps and find the place. On a computer, right-click on the exact point; on a phone, press and hold on it.
  2. Copy the coordinates that appear (for example 40.7128, -74.0060): the first number is the latitude and the second the longitude.
  3. Paste the latitude and longitude into their fields in the generator.
  4. Customize the design, download the code and check with your phone that it opens the right spot.

Ideas for using it

  • Wedding, birthday and event invitations.
  • Business cards and flyers.
  • Holiday rentals and country houses.
  • Meeting points for trips and hikes.
  • Warehouse, parking or side entrances that differ from the postal address.

Tips

Use the coordinates of the actual door or entrance, not the center of the building. That way the route ends exactly where the person needs to arrive.

If you would rather open your business listing on Google Maps (with hours, photos and reviews), copy the "Share" link of that listing and create a link QR code with it.

Size, color and contrast for your location QR code

A location QR code only stores two numbers (latitude and longitude), so it produces a very simple code that reads well from 0.8 in (2 cm). It's often printed on invitations, hotel brochures, trail signs and event posters. On an outdoor sign scanned from 3 to 6 ft (1 to 2 m), use at least 6 to 8 in (15 to 20 cm) per side.

Outdoors, choose matte, sun-resistant materials and a very dark color on a white background: light shades fade over time and the code stops scanning. On invitations, you can use the main color of the design if it's dark. Add the written address next to the code, or a line like "Scan for directions".

Other types of QR codes

Each type of code has its own generator with exactly the fields it needs. Pick the one that fits what you want to share:

Frequently asked questions

Which maps app does it open?

The phone's maps app: usually Google Maps on Android and Apple Maps or Google Maps on iPhone.

Where do I get the latitude and longitude?

In Google Maps, right-click (computer) or press and hold (phone) on the point: the coordinates appear and you can copy them.

Do I need internet to scan it?

Not to read the code, but to show the map and calculate the route the phone needs a connection or offline maps.

Can I show my business listing?

Yes: copy the link to your Google Maps listing and use the link QR code. That way your hours and reviews are shown too.

Does it work for places without a street address?

Yes. That's one of its biggest advantages: coordinates work for beaches, farms, viewpoints, meeting points or a specific entrance to a large venue.

How many decimals do I need in the coordinates?

Five or six decimals give you an accuracy of about one meter, which is more than enough. Copy the coordinates exactly as Google Maps shows them.

Can I mark several places in one code?

No: each code points to one spot. For several places, create a map in Google My Maps, copy its link and make a link QR code.
