Create a free QR code that opens a text message with the number and content already written. Great for contests, voting and alerts.
An SMS QR code opens the phone's messaging app with the recipient number and the text already written. The person only has to tap "Send".
It works without internet and on any phone, so it is perfect for contests, voting, keyword sign-ups or quick information requests.
SMS is still the most universal channel: it reaches older phones, people who do not use messaging apps and areas with poor data coverage. With a QR code, that channel becomes as convenient as any modern app, and you keep a single number to receive every reply. It also keeps working when mobile data is down or overloaded, such as at busy events.
Explain next to the code what happens when scanned and whether the message has a cost, especially if you use short codes or premium numbers.
A short message in capitals, such as "INFO APT 3B", is easy to recognize and process if you receive many.
An SMS QR code stores the number and the message. With a short message, such as a keyword, the code is simple and reads well at 1 in (2.5 cm) on flyers and labels. If the message is long, the code gets dense: go up to 1.6 in (4 cm) or shorten the text. On posters for contests, votes or campaigns, make it large and place it at eye level.
SMS campaigns are often printed in bold colors, but the code itself should still be dark on a light background. Save the bright color for the frame or the text around it. Always say what will happen when the message is sent ("Text us and get your coupon") and, if the service has a cost, state it clearly next to the code.
Each type of code has its own generator with exactly the fields it needs. Pick the one that fits what you want to share:
No. The messaging app opens with everything ready and the person decides whether to send it.
No. The SMS goes over the phone network, so it works without data or WiFi.
Yes. The camera on both systems recognizes the code and opens the messaging app.
Whatever the sender's carrier charges under their plan. The code itself is free.
Yes. Create one code per option with a different message, for example "VOTE A" and "VOTE B". Each person just scans and taps send.
No: the number and the message are stored in the code itself. If they change, you'll need to create and print a new code.
SMS doesn't need internet, only mobile network coverage. If there's no signal, the message will wait and be sent once the phone reconnects.
